It’s fun to be creative and to be free and without constraints. Yet ironically, creativity happens in the context of discipline and order. You can have freedom from rules but if you don’t have mastery over yourself, how creative can you actually be? Now at times, all of us can be a slave to something; lust, laziness, envy, greed, and pride. However, If we are not careful, these things can take over and diminish us unless we strive for self-mastery. The freedom to create is often the result of years of resilient practice and discipline. And of course, it’s not as if you submit to discipline once and never have to do it again. Excellence is renewed through deliberate practice and discipline day in and day out. Freedom or lack of it is influenced more by what we do for and to ourselves than what others do to us. At the end of the day, most of us can make ourselves freer and more effective through self-mastery. We all have times when our commitments feel heavy.

So the take away is that creativity and freedom are natural benefits that flow out of daily structure, order and discipline. Kind of interesting. Ironically, if there is a lack of discipline order and structure in your life, don’t expect freedom and creativity to manifest in your personal and professional life

  • The writer needs to sit at their writing table everyday
  • The artist needs to clean their brushes
  • The entrepreneur needs to manage staff and Cash flow
  • Freedom on the road requires obedience to traffic laws
  • Financial freedom requires consistency and self-restraint

Podcast – Why CNBC and BNN Might Be Destroying Your Investment Returns

If you want to foster professional resiliency you need to cultivate financial resiliency. Ironically, some of the trusted news and information sources that many investors turn to for investment information may actually be hurting your investment performance!

Literally, every second of the day, the media is bombarding us with financial information. It’s implied that this information is intended to inform. At some level,  I guess this is true. However, the primary motivation is the attraction of eyeballs and eyeballs attract advertisers, and of course advertisers create profits for the media content creators. I know this sounds cynical, but it’s true. In spite of this, every day millions of people consume financial information that is essentially financial porn! May well known investors (Warren Buffet, Peter Lynch and John Templeton) have warned us the sensational spin on financial information and trying to forecast the unknowable.. At the very least, this information creates low grade anxiety and attunes us to things that may not be overly relevant to building and preserving wealth. At it’s worst, this financial spin leads to knee jerk decision making that has negative consequences  that could take a life time for a person to recover from. In this podcast, I will cover a financial principle critical to successful investment planning.
