John Poyser is a member of the Wealth and Succession Practice Group with the Winnipeg law firm Tradition Law LLP. John helps clients in Manitoba, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia pass wealth from one generation to the next while minimizing taxes and structuring special arrangements to improve the lives of beneficiaries. He also handles estate litigation.
He is heavily involved in the leadership and education of lawyers working with wills and estates. At a national level, he serves as Secretary to the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). He is also a past chair of the Wills, Estates and Trusts Section of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), and headed a national working group for the CBA compiling and comparing succession laws for lawyers across Canada. He continues to administer the updating process to that project on contract to the CBA.
At a provincial level in Manitoba, John is a past chair of The Winnipeg Chapter of STEP, and a past chair of the Wills and Estates Section of the Manitoba Bar Association.
John has lectured extensively on estate planning and succession tax planning, including presentations in Toronto, London, Ottawa, Halifax, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and at various conference locations abroad for Canadian lawyers and advisors. He has published nationally, including journal articles and practice notes for lawyers, magazine articles for advisors, and newspaper articles for the public. He authors a monthly column in the Winnipeg Free Press entitled “Succession,” and a soon to be appearing column for the Calgary Herald.
John is the co-author of a textbook for Thomson-Carswell entitled “Taxation of Trusts and Estates, A Practitioner’s Guide,” now in its eighth edition, helping accountants and lawyers deal with income tax and planning issues arising out of trusts and estates. He teaches two certificate level courses geared for financial advisors and offered through The Knowledge Bureau, “Use of Trusts in Tax and Estate Planning”, and “Death of a Taxpayer.” Finally, he serves as an Associate Editor of the Estates & Trusts Reports, a national case law reporting service.
John assists Take Charge of Change by providing legal, tax and estate materials that assist clients to experience Financial Resiliency.
